STAR-TELEGRAM: "A GOOD FIT FOR FORT WORTH COUNCIL SEAT"

STAR-TELEGRAM: AND THEN THERE WERE 2
From the November 7, 2007, Star-Telegram:
Joel Burns was, for good reason, the top vote getter in a special City Council election to succeed Wendy Davis.
But with six candidates in the District 9 race, Burns was unable to avoid a December runoff election with Juan Rangel, a veteran Fort Worth school board member.
Burns, a resident of the Ryan Place neighborhood and a Realtor, is an advocate of rail transit, continued central-city redevelopment to revitalize older neighborhoods, strong code enforcement and well-funded police and fire departments.
These are priorities that resonate with most residents of District 9, which includes downtown, the TCU area, prosperous neighborhoods such as Berkeley and Mistletoe Heights and working-class commercial and residential areas flanking the Hemphill corridor and running south to Interstate 20.
The campaign of Burns, who the Star-Telegram Editorial Board has recommended as Davis' successor, was buttressed by the fact that he has considerable City Hall experience as a current member of the Zoning Commission and former chairman of the Historic and Cultural Landmarks Commission.
Unfortunately, tinges of political partisanship and questionable campaign tactics surfaced in the first round of balloting in a nonpartisan City Council election. In the month ahead, the focus for the candidates and the voters should be on core city issues.
